What is Astrology?

A Timeless Guide to Cosmic InfluenceAstrology, the ancient science of studying the movements and positions

of celestial bodies, has fascinated humanity for millennia. It offers profound insights into the influence

of planets and stars on human life, guiding individuals with a cosmic roadmap that reflects their past, present,

and potential future.

As the Vedic saying goes:

"फलानि ग्रहचारेण सूचयन्ति मनीषिण:को वक्ता तारतम्यस्य तमेकं वेधसं विना"

Those who know Astrology can only indicate what may happen in the future. But who, other than Brahma (the Creator)

can declare with certainty what will definitely occur?

"This timeless verse highlights a key truth about astrology: while it provides valuable clues based on planetary movements, the ultimate

certainty of events rests with the divine. Astrology reveals tendencies, but free will and cosmic destiny unfold in harmony with higher powers.

A Brief History of Vedic and Western Astrology

Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) originates from the ancient Indian scriptures, the Vedas, dating

back over 5,000 years. Its roots are deeply intertwined with spiritual practices, linking human

existence to the cosmos. Central to Vedic astrology is the study of 27 constellations (Nakshatras),

which serve as cosmic markers on the lunar path, shaping an individual’s character, destiny

and life journey. The system is known for its predictive precision, using planetary periods (Dashas)

and transits (Gocharas) to determine life’s unfolding events.

Vedic astrology operates primarily within the sidereal zodiac, a fixed star-based system, meaning it calculates the planets' positions relative to constellations at the moment of birth.

In contrast, Western Astrology has its origins in Mesopotamia and ancient Greece, with the earliest known astrological texts dating to around 2,000 BCE. It later evolved into the widely practised Hellenistic system, spreading across Europe and adapting through various cultural lenses. Western astrology is based on the tropical zodiac,

which is tied to the Earth’s seasons and the equinoxes, creating a shifting zodiac that differs from Vedic astrology.

While both systems share similarities—focusing on the planets' movements through the zodiac signs—Vedic astrology emphasises the role of the moon and constellations, whereas Western astrology focuses more on the sun and personality-based interpretations.

The 27 Nakshatras: Celestial Pillars of Vedic Astrology

At the heart of Vedic astrology are the 27 Nakshatras or lunar constellationseach covering 13°20' of the celestial sphere. These Nakshatras play a pivotal role in shaping astrological readings, as the moon transits through one Nakshatra every day. Each constellation holds unique symbolism, mythology, and meaning, influencing the psychological and emotional aspects of individuals born under their influence.

For example:

  • Ashwini represents swift action and healing.

  • Bharani symbolises life cycles and transformation.

  • Rohini is associated with creativity and abundance.

These constellations guide astrologers in understanding the deeper karmic patterns of an individual's life.

Astrology: A Cosmic Compass

Both Vedic and Western astrology provide invaluable tools for self-reflection, growth, and understanding of our cosmic connections. Whether rooted in the spiritual traditions of the East or the analytical approaches of the West, astrology empowers individuals by offering a lens through which they can navigate their life's journey.

By observing the stars and planets, we gain insight into our strengths, challenges, and opportunities. But as the verse reminds us, while astrology serves as a map, the ultimate certainty of events lies in the hands of a higher power, reminding us to balance free will with faith.

Astrology is not about rigid fate—it is a guide, helping us align our lives with the cosmic rhythms of the universe.
